Hey, thanks for the comment. Personally I like Japanese games a lot more, but I really think comparing east vs west as a whole in terms of advancement is stupid... it's like arguing musical genres against each other.

As for Japanese games having "more soul" I think of it kind of as... (just typically what I've seen) Japanese games are usually an interactive presentation of a story or concept, maybe allowing for a more cinematic/literary experience. I find a lot of Western games are more like a technical implementation of an idea - not so much "bringing an experience" to the player as "implementing assorted features for the player to use."

Maybe the focus is shifting to the west lately because the latter lends itself so well to emergent gameplay in this era...
